How Social Media Affects Mental Health

Introduction

With the help of social media, we can now interact with people across the world, exchange knowledge and experiences, and keep up with the latest events and fashion trends. Concerns regarding social media's possible effects on mental health have also been highlighted as a result of its growing use. In this project, we'll investigate how social media affects mental health and talk about the various ways it could harm us as individuals.

Background:

The way we interact with one another on social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat has completely changed. A recent study by the Pew Research Centre found that 69% of American adults use social media every day, making up 72% of the country's adult population. Despite the many advantages of social media, it has also been connected to several detrimental effects, such as sadness, anxiety, low self-esteem, etc.

Research Questions to Help Us in the Study:

1.    What impact does using social media have on mental health?

2. What possible drawbacks may social media use have?

3. What benefits do social media provide for mental health?

4. How can social media be used to support mental health??

Methodology:

We will perform a systematic evaluation of the prior literature to address these study topics. With the use of databases like PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar, we will look for pertinent publications. Studies that have appeared in peer-reviewed journals during the previous 10 years will also be included. We will do a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the data to find common themes and patterns in the literature.

Results:

According to our review of the evidence, using social media can affect mental health in both good and bad ways. Social media may help people connect with others who have similar interests and experiences, foster a sense of community, and raise awareness of mental health, among other things. On the other side, social media may also result in cyberbullying, inadequacy, and loneliness as well as social comparison. In addition, sleep problems and lowered well-being have been related to excessive social media usage.

Conclusion:

According to our research, social media use can have a big influence on mental health—both good and bad. Therefore, it's critical to utilize social media in a way that supports mental health and well-being. Limiting social media use, avoiding comparison with others, participating in constructive relationships and activities, and asking for assistance when necessary might all be part of this. Future studies should keep examining how social media affects mental health and come up with ways to lessen its detrimental impacts.
